Punjab & Haryana HC stays demolition drive at Chandigarh’s Janta Colony

File photo File photoCHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday stayed the demolition drive at Janta Colony, Sector 25, till further orders, asking the UT administration to submit its reply on a petition.

Davinder and 18 other colony residents claimed in the petition they were staying there for last many years and were eligible for houses under the slum rehabilitation scheme. The petition urged the court to stop the drive and issue directions to the UT for their rehabilitation.

The HC order said, “The competent authority not less in rank than secretary, housing and urban development (by whatever nomenclature the person so concerned is designated), shall file his own affidavit in reply to each paragraph of the petition, also stating as to whether or not the petitioners are covered by the eligibility conditions set down under provisions of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, 2015 or not; and if not, detailed reasons for that.” The case was adjourned for June 1.

The UT had decided to raze illegal structures in the colony on May 15.
